# Experiencing childhood in Iran

Marjane Satrapis uses illustration as a way of retelling her lived experiences in her autobiographical story. She details childhood while growing up, starting from age 10 in pre-revolutionary Iran through a linear graphic story. Experiencing war, revolution, political and social upheavals
and her stuggles as a child are a big part of her book. In a critical analysis essay of persepolis, Abigail Hustler describes how Marjane deals with confusion and inner conflicts of alienation as her family’s beliefs are liberal but she feels constrained by Islamic traditions, religion and the
political and social contradictions in Tehran. *“The novel recognises these contrasts: Marjane, even as a child, is very conscious of the social injustices, for example the fact that her maid is not allowed to eat with them and feeling guilty that her father drives a Cadillac; she also
demonstrates the gap between the modern and traditional, Eastern and Western cultures, when she goes to buy tapes on Gandhi Street in her punk jacket”.*

The essay also discusses, how *“the war is a significant factor in changing both the public and the personal space. For a child especially, the home is a place of safety and security of the home, which is changed by the invasive bombing. The relationship of between the public and private space is also altered throughout the novel by the oppression of the regime. “Our behaviour in public and our behaviour in private were polar opposites” (307): within the private space, she is able to behave more freely”. “School is another important space within the novel. Like the home, it is a key space for a child but rather than an environment which is stable, nurturing and creatively freeing, it is instead presented as a limiting space. In 1980, “it became obligatory to wear the veil at school” (3), boys and girls were separated and Marjane’s school was no longer bilingual because that was a symbol of “capitalism” and “decadence” (4). In this class photo, she is off the page, symbolically marginalised and isolated by the system. Indeed, she is expelled from school because of her willingness to challenge both the strict school rules, for example by wearing jewellery, and the regime, questioning what the teacher said about political prisoners (144). This is reflected later in the book when Marjane attends the art school: the college too is restricting. Rather than the creative freedom one would expect from an art school, it is a repressive and limiting space. The students are forced to draw fully veiled life models and forbidden to look at a man when sketching him, while the uniform, their own veils, restricts their freedom of movement”.*
Marjane’s parents and their Westernized beliefs had a big impact on her. She shows several times that she is rebelious and mature from a very young age, questioning her cuntry’s system, religion and traditions. Where we grow up, experience childhood and who we are surrounded by often has an effect on our lives.

Writing for Dazed in 2012, artists Sophia Al-Maria and Fatima Al Qadiri describe how the “themes and ideas of Gulf Futurism emerge: the isolation of individuals via technology, wealth, and reactionary Islam, the corrosive elements of consumerism on the soul and industry on the earth, the erasure of history from our memories and our surroundings and finally, our dizzying collective arrival in a future no one was ready for.” Al-Maria’s and Al Qadiri’s own works swirl with imagery of shopping malls, satellite TV, and video games—the stuff of teenage life, a world seen through a screen, always mediated.

“In medieval and early modern societies, mechanical time was secondary to social time. What we now see as exquisite detail and craftmanship on early clocks exhibits socially meaningful information.  Derek de Solla Price argues, ‘The first great clocks of medieval Europe were designed as astronomical showpieces, full of complicated gearing and dials to show the motions of the Sun, Moon and planets, to exhibit eclipses, and to carry through the involved computations of the ecclesiastical calendar.  As such they were comparable to the orreries of the 18th century and to modern planetariums; that they also showed the time and rang it on bells was almost incidental to their main function' (1959: 86).  In other words, the positions of celestial bodies were more important than the time of the day.  The movement of the stars was a way to discern auspicious and inauspicious days, weather, the growth of crops, and medical information about the human body.  The ‘hour’ of the day, the temporal hour, was also uneven, divided into equal units of daylight and night. Many early mechanical clocks (fourteenth-century Europe) did not have a minute hand, and if they did, it needed to be periodically corrected using a sundial.  In East Asia after the Jesuits introduced clocks, these mechanical devices became markers of wealth and prestige.  In Edo society (seventh-to nineteenth-century Japan) craftsmen added a second folio so that these status symbols could follow the temporal hour.  Mechanical time had to be adjusted to social time.”

'Nocturne is a 5 minute film shot entirely at night in deserted streets of the city. The film attempts to find images of London at night that reveal the presence of the past, or the presence of the dead, hinting at its concealed history. It is shot in deserted streets around the East End of London and Docklands as there is a feeling of an echoic city filled with shadows that manifests itself there at night.
It is composed of long static viewpoints, each shot slowly unfolding in time as if by looking long enough its secrets will be revealed. Shooting on 16mm film, using long exposures and timelapse techniques together give the film an intensity of colour and a sense of fleeting or historical time.
On these forgotten streets the sounds of night puncture the silence with more frantic, desperate outbursts and the silence becomes an active element. The film soundtrack recreates this teeming silence full of the sounds we tend to filter out, sounds such as the faint rumble of cars in the distance, planes flying overhead, the footsteps of people passing by, occasional voices and the wind blowing rubbish along the street.'

"This housing project in Porto is one of Siza’s most politically engaged works—due to the architect’s sensitive relation to the existing urban context and the involvement of the population in the process of design. Like other large-scale residential projects at the time, the housing was designed for the Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local (SAAL), a government organization that addressed the lack of safe and affordable housing in Portugal after the revolution of 1974. Part of a greater planning intervention intended to renovate a densely packed neighborhood in the historical center of the city, the row of twelve houses fills the small site, adapting itself to the locale and offering an alternative for tabula rasa approaches to urban renovation. Poetically blending regional and modern references, the project demonstrates that a scarcity of resources can result in a resonant cultural and political architectural statement."
